On Equality
LXXVI. On Equality
1. In God, equality obtains
between the bonifier, bonifying and the bonified,
as well as between the lover, the loveable and the beloved.
2. Were goodness and love
not to possess equal worth,
they would have greater and lesser such.
3. No imperfection can exist
in the equality between bonifying and loving,
for magnifying does not permit it.
4. Middle possesses such balance
within the equality between end and beginning
that it is perfect in every good.
5. Since equality can exist without minority,
yet majority could not do so,
equality possesses greater greatness of being. [1]
6. It is preferable for love to render
justice and forgiveness equal,
than <to do so with regard to> forgiveness and hope.
7. A sinful man who wishes to be equal
to a gracious man who is worthier than he,
knows the latter to be equally faithful (i.e. as faithful as he is gracious).
8. A proud man does not wish <to meet> his equal,
and, therefore, is worth less than others,
since no <person> who is greater wishes <to meet> his equal.
9. Since equality dwells within God,
yet majority fails to do so,
equality possesses more goodness <than does majority>.
